Starting To Collect Loose Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

The term gemology refers to the profession, science, and even art of evaluating and identifying gemstones from natural diamonds to loose gemstones. A number of people taken up this profession as a hobby. They become very interested in starting to collect loose gemstones or loose diamonds. You'll even find some that like to visit various local locations to look for rough gemstones. Some of them will even tumble or finish off the gemstones themselves. If this hobby interest you read along as we discuss the various factors in gemstone collecting.

Right at the beginning, what you need is to visit the library and get some books. You want to understand everything there is to know about precious and semiprecious gemstones. The more you understand about the hobby of gemstones the less likely you are to make a mistake. You will know exactly what to look for.

First on the list to evaluate is gemstone color. It is a fact that gemstones are the most intensely colored natural material available on earth. Gemstones are so related to color that they have even lent their names to specific colors. Everyone knows ruby red, emerald green, sapphire blue, aquamarine, turquoise, and jade green Gemstones will have a higher value they closer they are to natural spectral colors of violet, blue, green,, orange and red. They become less valuable when they are lighter or darker than the natural color.

The cut of the gemstone is an important aspect to consider in determining gemstone value. The cut has to be done correctly to reflect light properly. A gemstone with the poor cut will not reflect light consistently over its entire surface. Color saturation, color hue and color tone will always appear inconsistent

Another factor to consider is the stone's clarity. This is talking about the purity of the stone with no internal conclusions, internal particles or spots inside the crystal. Without a doubt, zero flaws will make a gemstone very valuable.

You will note that gemstones are categorized according to their size criteria because of being more uniform than carat weight. But different gemstones may be the same size but differ in carat weights and as a result different prices as well. This is due to gemstone difference of specific gravity or relative density depending upon the materials chemical composition and crystalline structure. For example, a one carat round diamond of typical proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A comparable round brilliant ruby of the same size and proportions will weigh approximately 1.55 carats.

Although gemstones are normally used for jewelry, loose gemstones are great for collecting. In fact, there are many attractive and interesting gems that are simply too big and fragile for use in jewelry. Take each loose gemstone and consider it as a piece of art and value it for its unusual nature and for the craftsmanship of the artisan who shaped it. And unlike some hobbies that require you to pay for your specimens you can use vacation time to actually hunt for raw gemstones in stead of buying. In the United States in Wyoming you can find Agate (including Moss Agate), Jade, Ruby, Jasper, Bloodstone as well as Star Sapphire. And in Canada you can find nephrite jade in Mount Ogden, British Columbia or Tourmaline from Chatham Twonship, Quebec and even zircons in Sebastopol and Brudnell Townships in Renfew County, Ontario. Think of collecting gemstones as a great hobby and pastime.
